Performance of the vane pumps

The performance of vane pumps is based on radial kinematics. Vane pumps are composed of a circular housing, inside within a ring that rotates eccentrically relative to a rotor. The rotor has slots, inside which the vanes are placed, moving radials with alternative movements.

When the engine is running, the increase of the chamber or space enclosed between the paddles, the rotor and the casing creates a vacuum. The atmospheric pressure derived from that vacuum drives the fluid into the pump. When this gap is reduced, the liquid is impelled outwards, through the discharge port.

This stem differs to the vane pump from the gear pump, in which we find two gears coupled inside the pump body. This pair of gears is composed in turn of a driving shaft, driven by the motor shaft, and a driven shaft. When the gear pump is in operation, the drive shaft rotates the driven one by the displacement generated by the contact between the teeth of the shafts and the teeth of the gears.

Within the type of vane pumps, we can differentiate between balanced and unbalanced vane pumps. Unbalanced pumps can be classified into fixed or variable displacement pumps. On the other hand, balanced vane pumps are characterized by a fixed displacement design.
